GULLY EROSION IN FUTO

GULLY EROSION IN FUTO
WHAT IS GULLY EROSION…?
GULLY EROSION is the removal of soil along drainage lines by surface water runoff. Once started, gullies will continue to move by headward erosion or by slumping of the side walls unless steps are taken to stabilise the disturbance.
Coming down to school through Diamond Bank, you would see a very mighty GULLY(Photos below) going deep down the earth.
I know most of us may not have seen this or may be ignorant of it.
It’s high time we start being very observant of the things happening within our environment.
From my analysis as a Futo Student I gathered that Presently, that Gully wasn’t formed when I saw it or during one or two heavy rainfalls, it was formed over 2years now but no one noticed.
GULLY formation is a gradual process. My research shows that…
Firstly, there used to be a drainage from the Main Gate that connects through the left side of the bridge. I don’t really know what happened & when it did, one part of the drainage pavement that directs the flow of water, broke off; after this happened, nothing was done to build it. Water keeps on flowing without direction, the more heavy rainfall hits that part, it keeps on eating deep into the land until it decided to eat up quarter part of the road.
Secondly, Uncontrolled Grazing in FUTO is one of the causes of the Gully erosion. Cattle Pastoralists in FUTO are very good at carrying out Uncontrolled grazing. They allow these cows to match through the side of the bridge down into the slope that leads to the river bank.
These cows go there to eat grasses & drink water, anytime they go there, their hoofs create an artificial gutter thereby deceiving the water flow into the Otammiri river.
All these happen from day to day, month to month, year to year and nothing is being done about it. The GULLY keeps going deeper & deeper into the Soil.
Every FUTO Student, Staffs, Drivers, Workers, are humbly advised to be very careful & apply caution on getting to that part of the road.
It would be much better if everyone desert that part of the roundabout and make use of the other part to avoid stories that touch the heart.
FUTO drivers are also advised to drive slowly on getting to that part of the road.
FUTO CATTLE MEN ARE ALSO WARNED TO DESIST FROM GRAZING THROUGH THAT PART!

There is a Long Stick with red cloth on top(fixed by a good Samaritan) to indicate danger, but we don’t trust that warning sign, THE PROBABILITY OF THAT IT WILL DISAPPOINT IS 0.98.
WE CALL ON THE ALUTA EXCELLENCE EXECUTIVES THROUGH THE SUG PRESIDENT, COMR. NNAEMEKA AKANO(GRAND COMMANDER OF THE STUDENTS’ SECURITY) TO GET THE ATTENTION OF THE SCHOOL MANAGEMENT FOR QUICK & IMMEDIATE ACTION BEFORE THAT GULLY KILLS A FUTO STUDENT(S).

If you have any observation drop it below.
